Each NSBE Collegiate Chapter is encouraged to participate in the Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program. According to NSBE National Standards, the PCI Program is, “designed to stimulate the interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, or STEM. The goal is to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees.” For years, CU NSBE has committed to this mission, partnering with neighboring high schools to get young students excited about STEM fields.
We are currently partnered with the East Harlem School (EHS) and Columbia Secondary School (CSS). Columbia NSBE members take time every Saturday morning to tutor EHS students in math and science. We use this time to foster a love for STEM in the younger generation and show them that students of color can excel in engineering. We were also able to foster a mentorship relationship with Columbia Secondary School, giving them the structure to start their first ever NSBE Jr. chapter. We plan on expanding our programming with both schools, hosting workshops to engage the students in STEM activities. Stay tuned for information about the events we are hosting this year with both schools!
